Types of shirk (we must avoid)

Types of shirk (we must avoid)

Shirk; the most dangerous sin!
Assalammualaikum everyone! This is a (pretty) serious matter, so please read this entry carefully. Hopefully we’ll benefit something from it insyallah. :) Remember that shirk is INDEED the most dangerous sin and should be avoided no matter what! Here are some basic types of shirk:

1. As Muslims, we should believe in the Oneness of Allah, and He is to be worshipped alone (without associating Him with any beings). With that, we must always be careful to not commit shirk; for it is the ONLY sin Allah will NEVER forgive!

2. The first type of shirk is grave worshipping. This is a belief that the dead (saints, wali) can fulfill one’s needs or help at times of distress, so they call upon the dead for aid or to rescue them from calamity or disaster. Take note that ONLY Allah can help us, and nobody else; including the dead.
For example:
“Oh dead ones please help my son on his journey”
“Oh dead ones, if I manage to get promoted at work, I will slaughter an animal”

Related hadith: show

3. Astrology, numerology and horoscope are sadly, the trend in today’s modern society. Therefore, we Muslims should curb this understanding at all costs! These beliefs, without us realizing, lead to shirk! So the next time you see an article or horoscopes in newspapers/Facebook, put it aside, pronto!
For example:
“Number 7 is lucky for me so I should have it on my car plate number!”
“My horoscope sign says that I will be granted with wealth tomorrow!”

Related hadith: show

4. Sadly, several ignorant wrongdoers and are weak in faith turn to shaman or bomoh in order to seek aid, or to help them harm another person (with black magic) when they should turn to Allah for help instead (Note: Allah disapproves of black magic)! Whenever you’re in trouble, always seek Allah. As Muslims, we do not require any mediums, so why not pray and make dua’ to Allah directly instead?
For example:
“Shaman, I need your help in finding my missing gold bracelet”
“Shaman, I need you to harm my boss with your black magic”
“Shaman, please tell me what my future holds for me”

5. Wearing amulets, talisman, rings, threads etc in order to seek protection, prevention, good luck, lifting afflictions etc is downright shirk! These are mere inanimate objects are men-made, so there is no way it they could help us in any way! Only Allah can help us in any way possible.
For example:
“If you wear this bracelet, it will safeguard you from evil”
“Wear this ring and it will give you good luck”

Related verse from the Quran” show

6. Although shirk is the most dangerous sin, Allah promises to forgive as long as one is still alive and do taubah! In addition, memorize and practice the dua’ for fear of shirk (extracted from Hisn Al-Muslim) regularly and insyallah, we’ll benefit from it.
“Allahumma inee a’au dhu bika an oshrika bika wa- ana a’aalam, wa – astaghfiruka lima la a’alam”
(Oh Allah, I take refuge in you lest I should commit shirk with You knowingly, and I seek Your forgiveness for what I do unknowingly)

Tips for Better Wudu

Tips for Better Wuduq

5 simple ways to make our wuduq better! :)
Wuduq, or ablution is an act of washing parts of our body. Being a righteous Muslim, wuduq is done on daily basis (before praying, sleeping, etc). So being said that, wuduq should be taken seriously and we must always do our best to make our wuduq better :) So here are some simple ways to make our wuduq better, insyallah.

1. What’s better than having a complete, nice, wuduq before meeting Allah (prayers)? Awesome, fresh teeth and mouth of course! :D Although brushing teeth is not a compulsory part of wuduq, it is still highly recommended!
Related hadith: show

2. Wuduq plays an important role in a Muslim’s life, for wuduq does not only clean parts of our body, but did you know that whoever takes wuduq, your sins will be washed out? Masyallah! How simple is that? So take wuduq regularly and be fresh 24/7!
Related hadith: show

3. The next time you’re taking wuduq, pay attention to washing your hands and feet! Make sure that water goes in between your fingers and toes! Also, make sure that water reaches your heels, because a wuduq is invalid if water does not reach your heels (and other compulsory parts).
Related hadith: show

4. The correct way of taking wuduq for the head part is to wipe the WHOLE head, and not solely on the front bit. To do so, wet your hands and start wiping at the front and then make way to the back of the head, then back to where you started.
Related verse from the Quran: show

5. Saving the environment (in this case, water) is a job for every Muslim! When taking wuduq, minimize the usage of water by not allowing water gushing out from the tap too much! Turn the tap just nicely to ensure parts of your body are covered with water. Remember; you’re trying to get rewards from taking wuduq, not sins!

Ways to Treat Your Parents

Ways to Treat Your Parents

Thank you Allah for our OSM parents!
Having parents is one of the biggest gift (rezeki) given to us by Al-Mighty Allah. Without us realizing, they have been and will always be our best friends; the ones who will always love and care for us no matter when or what happens, masyallah! If you still have your parents around, be thankful and keep giving your love to them! However, if your parents have gone back to Allah, do not be sad! Allah promises that the Believers will be reunited with their parents in Jannah (Paradise) later, insyallah. Here are some very basic ways for children to treat their parents:

1. The most essential duty of a Muslim child (no matter how young or old you are!) is to show kindness and respect towards his or her parents. This can be in a form of many things; from kind words to warm hugs! In fact, Allah has commanded us to be kind to our parents in His verses, so it’s an important duty that should be taken seriously.

2. Parents are to be treated like Kings and Queens; hence we as daughters or sons should always speak nicely and generously to our parents! And don’t forget to smile whenever you speak to them (yes, even if you’re on the phone! :P)
Related verse from the Quran: show

3. Have you ever heard a nasyeed called “Your Mother” by Yusuf Islam? This is also one of the ways to treat your parent; which is to give EXTRA love to her! Mothers deserve fine and awesome treatment, for they have borne the child’s burden during pregnancy, has undergone birth pains, sacrificed her own comfort to her children, so many others!
But this doesn’t mean you should ignore your fathers! They too, are super awesome, so both parents must be treated with much respect.

4. Don’t wait for special occasions to show your appreciation towards your loving parents! There are many ways to show your appreciation to them; like giving flowers, free back massage, cards, cook their favourite food, and many many others (within your capability and creativity!) And remember, everytime you do, do it with the right “niat”, and full with sincerity. In the end you’d just want to please Allah and make your parents feeling joyous :)

5. The best way to treat your parents is to continuously make dua’ for them! Make dua’ in your prayers or sujud, whenever you thinking or missing them, or even the times when they are in your presence. May Allah bless our beloved parents and grant them Paradise, amin!
“Rabbi-r-hamhumaa ka-mma rabbayaa ni sa-ii-ra”
Dua’ for parents in the Quran: show

6. Whenever you feel like it, tell your parents without hesitation: “I LOVE YOU!” *heart*

A Muslim’s Duties Towards the Quran

Quran: Love, believe, recite, understand, practice and spread it!
The Quran was given to us Muslims as guidance for us to live accordingly in the temporary world. In fact, the Quran is able to lead us to Paradise and bring the Believers away from Hell fire, so may Allah guide and enable us to re-establish our contact with the Quran! Here are our duties, as Muslims, towards the Holy Book:

1. Believing in the Quran is the third pillar of faith in Islam and is the first duty towards the Book. As Muslims, we should put our utmost faith in it. The Quran isn’t just a Book about rules of Dos and Don’ts, but it’s a sacred Book full of stories and miracles; even many have been scientifically proven (eg: creation of human, rain system, honey bees, etc)! So even tho’ it might sound very epic or hard to believe, but know this; the Quran is made out of Allah’s words so take Quran as an important aspect in our lives!
Related verse from the Quran: show

2. The second duty towards the Quran is to recite it in the best manner possible; which is slowly, clearly and with a nice and proper tone. Take note that one must speak and enunciate (pronounce) when reciting, not to “recite” it in his or her thoughts!
The Quran should also be read proficiently. Proficient means one who reads the Quran in accordance with the rules of At-Tajwid. However, for those who do not read fluently, but reads with great effort, Masyallah, he will be given double the reward! :D
Related verse from the Quran: show
Related hadiths: show

3. Reciting the Quran without understand its meanings isn’t complete for a Muslim! Understand of the Quran means to contemplate its meanings, to reflect on its teachings, aims and wisdoms. In fact, it is the key to all knowledge, insyallah. There are many ways to learn and understand the Quran, so use the technology and your capabilities at its best in order to learn about the words of Allah! All the best! :)
Related verses from the Quran: show

4. Now that we’ve believed, recite and understand, it would only be appropriate to apply and practice the contents of the Quran! Examples of applying the teachings of the Quran are: by deeming lawful what it permits (eg: eat halal food, earn halal money), deeming forbidden what it forbids (eg: stealing, wasting time), avoiding what it prohibits (eg: zina) and applying all of its laws (eg: wear hijjab).
Related hadith” show

5. It is a duty bound upon every Muslim (not just Imaams, Scholars or Ustaz) to invite people towards the path of Allah. But before doing so, one must acquire the knowledge, for one cannot provide any guidance without knowledge. Remember, “Spread knowledge even if it’s just one verse of the Quran!” So equip yourself with good knowledge (even if it’s just little) and you’re good to go!

Ethics of Sleeping

Ethics of Sleeping

Care for some ZZZs?
Islam is a way of life; it even has guides or ethics of sleeping which makes us healthier and more energized when we wake up in the morning! Masyallah :)

1. Sleeping, when done with the right niyah (intentions) can be considered as a good deed in the eyes of Allah. The purpose of sleeping (at night) is for our bodies and minds to take a temporary “time-out” and as a refresher to work during the day! So use your nights wisely to sleep, and get rewarded doing it insyallah ;)
Related verses from the Quran: show

2. Wuduq is a form of purity and it should be taken/ performed not only for praying purposes- but for preparation to sleep aswell! That way, insyallah, you will stay pure during your sleep. In addition, the Devil (syaitaan) will be less able to harm or frighten us during our sleep. (nightmares… yikes!)
Related hadiths: show

3. It is also sunnah to dust off your mattress or bed before sleeping! It is known that the syaitaan is everywhere and enjoy teasing the ummah; thus doing this act can ensure that the syaitaan does NOT sleep on the same bed! Double yikes!
Summary of steps from the hadith*:
1) Dust off mattress before sleeping on bed
2) Dust the mattress off three times
3) As dusting it off, say “Bismillah”
4) Use lower garment to dust (or with blanket, pillow etc)
Related hadith: show

4. The Prophet s.a.w would recite verses of the Quran, blow in his hands and wipe his face and body before going to sleep. In fact, he would perform this every single night so therefore we as his ummah should practice this noble act too! This way, insyallah, Allah would protect us from Black Magic (sihir) and evil.
Related hadiths: show

5. Sleeping on the right side (with hand under cheek) was indeed the way of Prophet Muhammad s.a.w sleep! This way of sleeping has several benefits (scientifically proven): It helps a person wake up with energy and when compared to sleeping on one’s left side, less weight is put on the heart thus it’s healthier! Subhanallah!
